Intercultural & Creative Music Fellowship 2022: Presented by Humber College's Centre for Creative Business Innovation & the Aga Khan Museum. A team of student Fellows from Humber College (in Toronto, Canada) collaborated for 14 weeks in the summer of 2022, to create eight pieces of music and music videos, ten works of poetry and a Creative Process film. The seven musicians and three filmmakers explored interconnectedness across cultures, incorporating each person’s unique lived experience. These compositions of music, film, and poetry delve into themes of belonging, time, our differences and the shared culture of the modern age we must nurture. I was commissioned to compose a 90 second original piece inspired by this painting by Jutai Tonoo titled 'Bottled Water' for Humber Galleries REACTIVATION Project 2021. I wrote my piece ‘Away’ taking inspiration from Jutai Tonoo’s oil pastel painting ‘Bottled Water’. ‘Away’ is my musical interpretation of the painting as a viewer. I interpreted the painting with the theme of ‘longing’ and ‘distance’. It could be between any two humans, living beings or objects for that matter. The piece elaborates that emotion of distance and efforts to reach out to the other person/object. The colours used in the painting help me shape the soundscapes and I used the two objects - the hands and the bottle as my main theme for the melody.
